Isidore String Quartet spielt Maurice Ravel

Sun, Jan 26, 2025, 11:00
Adrian Steele, Phoenix Avalon (Violin), Devin Moore (Viola), Joshua McClendon (Cello)
The Isidore String Quartet, founded in New York in 2019, explores and revitalizes the string quartet repertoire. Winners of the 2022 Banff International String Quartet Competition, they approach old works as new and new works as old. In their Essen debut, they'll perform works by Dutilleux and Ravel, along with "Carrot Revolution" by Gabriella Smith, a piece influenced by Bach, Bluegrass, Ligeti, and Simon & Garfunkel. A post-concert discussion and a "Sunday Matinee Plus" for seniors will follow.

Von Puppen und Schelmen

Thu, Jan 30, 2025, 19:30
Maximilian Hornung (Cello), Essener Philharmoniker, Alondra de la Parra (Conductor)
Till Eulenspiegel, first mentioned in 1510, is one of the world's most famous pranksters. Strauss composed a symphonic poem capturing Eulenspiegel's mischievous nature. Stravinsky's "Petrushka" immerses us in a vibrant fairground atmosphere where the puppet, Petrushka, comes alive. Baudelaire's poetry inspired Dutilleux's cello concerto "Tout un monde lointain," a work full of color, melancholy, and sensuality, transporting us to a mysterious world.

NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra / Leif Ove Andsnes / Alan Gilbert

Thu, May 8, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, Leif Ove Andsnes (Piano), Alan Gilbert (Conductor)
Is it just a cliché to assume that French music is particularly sophisticated? Or is there more than just a grain of truth in it? An exciting question. Alan Gilbert and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra explore this question when they take a trip to France with Leif Ove Andsnes as part of the Hamburg International Music Festival. With three visionary works that rarely find their way into the concert hall and illuminate the festival motto »Future« in a unique way.

Cello-Frühling

Fri, May 16, 2025, 19:00
Peter-Philipp Staemmler (Cello), Delyana Lazarova (Conductor)
Experience the radiant Spring feelings of a young deceased Frenchwoman, an early Beethoven defying fate with musical confidence, and hr-solo cellist Peter-Philipp Staemmler performing a vibrant modern cello concerto in Quick & Classy. Bulgarian conductor Delyana Lazarova will bring to life not only Lili Boulanger's touching orchestral music but also the dreamlike nocturnal world of Henri Dutilleux. Not to mention Beethoven's virtuosity, marked by sharp contrasts, which belies his despair over increasing deafness and isolation. Concert duration: approx. 70 minutes - no intermission!
